The delivery of the magic word ENDEX would usually come over the radio or you’d be sitting in your armoured vehicle, trench or shell scrapes when suddenly some base-rat OC’s bitch would appear. ‘ENDEX lads pass it on, move out in 30 minutes.’ When it came it was greeted with a loud cheer, lots of beer and the sparking up of cigarettes.
That silent wood you were hidden away in would suddenly come alive with loud banter, the roaring of engines, the filling in of trenches and the flashing of torches as everyone rushed around preparing to move out, you’d never see the troops move so fast. There was more urgency in that hour than there was in the whole exercise!! But it was all in vain.
In GERMANY What usually followed the magic word ENDEX was the issue of horror bags and the usual hurry up and wait. Whether your transport was a white/green bus, with the usual on the bus, off the bus routine, or a mind that tail gate Bedford lorry or by means of German snail rail, ‘no sleeping in the luggage racks’ while you toured the whole of Germany, it was now exercise ‘sleep anywhere’ until you eventually arrived back to civilization.
